Judge: Jamie MacArthur Our judge for 2016 was Jamie MacArthur. Jamie who is a qualified civil engineer born in Glasgow in 1965, had a passion for wildlife since he was knee high to a Sparrow. As a child he would often bring home birds and animals orphaned by their parent. Jamie would try and photograph his little pets unsuccessfully but never gave up. In his early teens he purchased a Zenit E and then eventually a secondhand Canon A1 with a 70-200mm lens along with a Sunpak 4205G flashgun. Then he set about learning his fieldcraft and how to photograph birds at high speed (with some success), however due to family commitments had to give this up. The passion to photograph birds stayed with Jamie all his life and at the age of 40, he remortgaged his house to buy a 600mm lens and a Canon D30. This soon paved the way for Jamie to push himself further and further in achieving his goal of being a top class bird photographer. The proof of his progress came when he won an international wildlife competition with his photograph of a diving kingfisher. His prize was a safari for two with Wilderness Safaris in South Africa. Jamie has travelled extensively and in the past twelve months has spent time in Florida, Lesvos, the Shetlands and South Africa. He runs photographic workshops with up to three people and these have taken place in Lesvos, the Gambia and Costa Rica. |
